One of the most valued pieces of furniture to come out in recent years is hickory hardwood cabinetry. Not only are these beauties made from a strong and resilient material, but they also have a very warm and pleasant grain and texture. Hickory is a very sturdy type of wood, usually produced straight from hickory trees found in America, and while it may be quite highly valued and distinguished by it’s characteristics, it is notoriously difficult to work and reshape. Although hickory is actually quite a light material, it has a very coarse texture as well as grains which leave the material with colors ranging from a very rich and deep brown to a light and blonde hue. The natural aspect of the bark is heavily emphasized by all the various knots and different unique patterns present on the wood. While the wood is a bit hard to rework, it actually takes quite well to specific types of stains, preferably darker ones. They are even sometimes finished with various types of glazes such as cognac or hazelnut for example, turning them into much, much more than mere furnishings; they become works of art.
There are some very unique and interesting characteristics to the hickory hardwood which would serve very well cabinets installed in the kitchen. First of all, the lovely grain and texture integrate very well into practically any type of environment and enhance everything around them. If there is one room in your house where the aesthetics are indeed important not only for you but also for the various guests and visitors you will receive, it is definitely the kitchen. If you think about it, this is the first place where you will be inviting the people who come over to your place. In most families, it is the room where meals are prepared and consumed, which serves as a moment of reunion for every member.
However great this material may seem however, I need to warn you about a few shortcomings which come along with it. First of all, this type of wood has no tolerance for moisture; it enhances its decay by a terrible rate, which means that you will have to either have proper ventilation in the room or apply some type of protective coating to the cabinetry. Along with that, hickory cabinets are also quite expensive and are simply not for every homeowner; only for those who are looking for something which will make their dwelling a brighter place to live in.
